I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Road safety issues (Speeding), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. π¦ Community Speedwatch β Making Roads Safer Kent Police runs Community Speedwatch, a volunteer-led initiative focused on reducing speeding and improving safety. What is Speedwatch? π₯ Local volunteers, trained by Kent Police, monitor speeds at approved sites (20, 30, or 40 mph zones) using certified equipment. π Details of speeding vehicles are securely logged for 12 months. Repeat or excessive offenders may receive advisory lettersβand in some cases, personal visits from officers. Important: Speedwatch is educational, not enforcement. No fines or penalty points are issued directly, but the data helps target police action and inform road safety improvements. β
Does it work? Yes! Over 90% of drivers recorded speeding once are not seen again within 12 months, and overall speeding reduces in communities over time. π Want to help? If you can spare an hour a week, join us! π www.kent.police.uk/speedwatch This morning whilst conducting proactive patrols around our wards PC Denney and I located a Ford Transit on Impton Lane which despite having an untaxed vehicle warning sticker applied to the window by the DVLA, still had no road tax. Residents informed us that it had previously had a tyre clamp applied, however this was now missing... Given that the vehicle still had no road tax, we seized this vehicle on behalf of the DVLA.
Only a few minutes later we received information from a resident that another untaxed vehicle had been abandoned beside the A20 Ashford Road in Hollingbourne overnight. We promptly attended and seized this vehicle too.
Whilst enforcement against untaxed vehicles on the roads is primarily a DVLA responsibility, these vehicles present a hazard to other road users, and Police are able to exercise devolved seizure powers provided to us by the DVLA to remove them.
If you're aware of a vehicle which has no valid road tax and is being used or parked on the public highway, feel free to respond to this message or report it to Kent Police and we will see what we can do about it. You can check a vehicle's tax status online at https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax
